Dating For Puppets: Conversation Starters

Let’s face it, dating for puppets can be a confusing proposition.

You’re constantly asking yourself, “Do I date a hand puppet or a marionette?” And what about sock puppets and ventriloquist dummies?

And then there’s life on the road.

Life on the road can be lonely. You can spend a lot of time in your traveling case between gigs making it really difficult to meet someone.

Then when that magic moment finally arrives, what do you say? How do you act? How do you get the conversation going?

Here are three conversation starters that should make things a LOT easier…

Dating For Puppets Conversation Starter #1

Tell a joke. You’re good at it. You do it all the time on stage. You must have a million of them. It’s something you and your dating partner share in common, and it should get you both laughing and swapping jokes like you’ve known each other for years.

Here’s one to get you started:

YOU: “Why don’t blind people like to skydive?”

YOUR DATE: “I don’t know why?”

YOU: “Because it scares the dog!”

OK if the joke thing isn’t working for you, or you just don’t feel comfortable delivering a punchline off the stage,  it’s time to move to phase 2.

You can ask your date something like, “My puppeteer is such a pain in the pine to lip sync to. He’s always ad-libbing. He can be about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle. What’s the funniest thing YOUR puppeteer ever made you say on stage that tied your lips in knots (look meaningfully at your dates lips and lean in slightly to show interest)?”

Remember to show genuine interest as your date talks. Ask questions and interact.

Here’s a question that’s sure to get your date going. Ask your date what the silliest thing their puppeteer ever made them do on stage was. It’s guaranteed to get a response, and you can also feel free to share some of your war stories on the road.

Be sure not to monopolize the conversation and give your date plenty of attention.

A Few Final Thoughts

While talking shop can be a way to get the conversation going, you’ll eventually want to bring the conversation around to a more personal level.

One bit of dating for puppets advice however is: NEVER ask a marionette, “How’s it hanging?” It makes them crazy and you’re liable to come away with a control rod stuck where the sun don’t shine.

When the conversation moves away from the stage and life on the road and turns more personal however, you can ask questions like:

  • “What would you do if you were suddenly free from your puppeteer and you could do anything you wanted?”
  • “What was the most amazing moment in your life?”
  • “What type of wood are you made out of?”
  • “If you could have any super power what would it be?

The most important thing throughout the evening is to just be yourself. And don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of things to talk about and stories to share.

And if the evening doesn’t go the way you want it to, don’t hang around sulking, or let your date pull your strings, there’s plenty of pine puppet booty to pick from.

Get out of your travel trunk and put yourself back out there!
